May 2010 preliminary hotel occupancies averaged 68.60% as compared to 67.45% in May 2009, a 1.7% increase.
For the first five months of the year 2010, the average occupancy is at 71.87%, compared to 77.03% in 2009. This is a decrease of 6.7% The decrease in YTD average hotel occupancy was mainly due to the increase in room capacity on the island compared to last year.
The May occupancies were heavily affected by a drop in Venezuelan arrivals which continues to affect not only the hotel performance, but also other areas such as down town shopping, restaurants etc.
