April 2010 preliminary hotel occupancies averaged 69.02% as compared to 72.86% in April 2009, a 5.2% decrease. For the first trimester of the year 2010, the average occupancy is at 72.69, compared to 79.43% in 2009. This is a decrease of 8.5%

The decrease in average hotel occupancy in April was mainly due to the increase in room capacity on the island with an additional 1.000 rooms (20% increase) compared to last year. It is to be taken into consideration that Hyatt  Curacao is not as of yet included, since they have had their soft opening on April 20th.

The month of April also saw the influence of the ash Iceland Volcano cloud in Europe, causing flight delays and cancellations. Venezuelan arrivals have affected the April occupancies, which continues to affect the hotel performance occupancies, but also other areas such as down town shopping, restaurants etc.
