January hotel occupancies reflect lower visitor nights and increased room capacity. CTB preliminary stay-over visitor arrival figures for January 2010 showed a 13% decrease compared to January 2009.

South America accounted for a 59% drop in visitor arrivals in January 2010 compared to January 2009.This drop was mostly caused by a 74% decrease in visitor arrivals from Venezuela, in January 2010 compared to January 2009.

January figures showed increases in visitor arrivals from North America (27%), Europe (19%) and the Caribbean (10%).

Because of the longer average stay of North American, European and Caribbean visitors, total visitor nights showed an increase of 8%.

January 2010 hotel occupancies averaged 72.4% as compared to 82.4% in January 2009, a 12.4% decrease.

The decrease in average hotel occupancy was mainly due to the increase in room capacity on the island with an additional 1.000 rooms. Room capacity totaled 5.139 rooms by the end of 2009.

With the opening of the Hyatt Regency Curacao (350 rooms) it is expected that hotel occupancies on the island will continue to be lower on average in 2010 as compared to previous years 2006, 2007 and 2008 of solid hotel occupancies, because of increased room capacity.
