Auction of holiday packages at Vakantiebeurs, Utrecht generates 15.700 euro from Curaçao en other Caribbean destinations.

Rotterdam, 18th January 2010. Past weekend the Curaçao Tourist Board Europe was the driving force behind an impressive travel auction in the Caribbean pavilion during the recent Dutch holiday fair ‘Vakantiebeurs’. By spontaneously developing a travel auction for the victims of the Haiti earthquake the most popular Caribbean destination in Holland proved her involvement with the human suffering on the island.

Split second decision
Edward Suares, managing director of the Curaçao Tourist Board Europe, was very determined: “After hearing about the Haiti catastrophe I immediately contacted my trade colleagues from the island, mostly CHATA members, who were present at the annual ‘Vakantiebeurs’ in Holland. Last year Curaçao celebrated her 25th anniversary here and it is the premier destination in the Caribbean on the Dutch travel market. That position demands extra responsibility in case of a disaster situation on one of the neighbouring Caribbean islands. We bought tickets from the Dutch airline Martinair and many of our hoteliers spontaneously offered a week stay in addition.”
Suares continues: “Last year Curaçaos leading role within the Caribbean was further strengthened. In a suppressed long haul market caused by the economic crisis, Curaçao managed to grow 13% in Holland. It is expected that the number of Dutch visitors will reach the record level of 125.000 by the end of the year.

Strong co-operation
Suares says that the rapid and rational set up of this auction is an example of the solid co-operation between the tourist board and private sector partners on the island. He adds: “Not only do we partner and add value on commercial campaigns with the Curaçao tourist industry, but we also unite on a social level were necessary. Having said that, I’d like to also express my gratitude to the way in which Martinair, a very important airline partner for Curaçao, has connected with this initiative.”

Fantastic travel packages
Visitors in the Caribbean pavilion benefited in two ways. They contributed to the Dutch aid campaign for Haiti and at the same time benefited from attractive travel offers to Curaçao, which had been facilitated by the Curaçao Tourist Board Europe, Kontiki Dive & Beach Resort, Breezes Curaçao Resort Spa & Casino, Dolphin Suites, Dolphin Academy, Floris Suite Hotel, Boca Gentil Hotel & Villa’s, Lions Dive & Beach Resort Curaçao, Ocean Encounters, Morena Resort, Plaza Hotel Curaçao, Livingstone Jan Thiel Resort, Hilton Curaçao, Otrabanda Hotel, Habitat Dive Resort Curaçao and Avila Hotel.
